My top ten

Some time ago, I read an article, in which the writer was talking about good-looking women being ogled at on the roads.

She said, "Do you know what is worse than being ogled at? Not being ogled at."

Funny and unfortunately true at times.

Now why am I saying this? Well, long story.

My good friend ROS knows I'll kick her ass if she tags me on any post. I'd rather not be tagged than be tagged and not be able to respect it. Someone tags you because they want to know something about you. And if it's too much pressure for you to blog on pre-determined topics, I say don't get tagged.

And that's why people generally don't tag me. Because I give them hazaar gaalis (a thousand abuses) if I see myself in their tag list.

So when I saw ROS and her list of 8 qualities in her perfect lover, I went through the list of people she had tagged, and sure enough, my name wasn't there.

Now here's the surprising part.

I have to admit I was slightly disappointed not to see my name there. (I guess I'm like the Bollywood heroine who says, when the hero takes her in his arms, "Chhodo na, Chintu aa jayega." And when he lets her go, she says in a disappointed tone, "Chhod diya?")

Anyway, what goes around, comes around. So here I am, tagged by Pradyot who was tagged by ROS for the same post that ROS did not tag me for. Hah!

Ok, first things first. I don't quite like the sound of the word 'lover' (it kinda creeps me out) so I'm just gonna avoid its usage. I assume that for this tag, when we talk 'lover', we're talking the kind you would wanna spend your life with. Cos if not, it will clash with the points in my earlier post on attached singlehood.

So here it is, my list.
I have left out the obvious characteristics most girls would want in a guy, e.g. intelligent, caring, sensitive, understanding, must-accept-me-as-I-am, etc. I have tried to squeeze my very high expectations into 10 points (Sorry Prad, they wouldn't fit into 8!)

  • I love to travel. It would be good if he did too. I need at least two vacations a year. (Yes, I'm the kind who'd rather spend her sad salary on holidays than on Gucci and Prada and blah). So if he doesn't want me to take off without him (which I will, if he's not the travelling type) he'd better be the travelling type.
  • I love to cook. And I believe I do a good job at it. Readers who've had my cooking, care to validate? (A blog friend recently remarked that I don't come across as the kind who can cook well. 'Hmmmph!' is all I have to say to him.) It would be good if he was fond of food and not the 'anything goes' kind. I would want to experiment with food and he would be the guinea pig, so he'd better give me constructive criticism. Thankfully, so far none of my new recipes have been disasters.
  • I am a health freak. I would definitely wanna marry someone who's active and just as big a health freak as I am. Smoking is an absolute no-no. The ideal case would be a tall guy with a good body who can pull off (both figuratively and literally) a black shirt with style and confidence. Sometimes gymming alone can get a bit boring, and it would be nice to have his company there. Laziness is an absolute no-no. He should always wanna do something, though chilling at home once in a while can also be a good idea.
  • Like I said before, I can't live without the Internet. So I'd prefer a geek (a 'fun geek' though, they're the fastest growing breed right now) who should be able to fix my computer. Other geeky talents are most welcome. I know a guy who wrote an application for me to easily rename tags of my MP3 files. I was very impressed. Yeah, I'm talking that kinda stuff. Little surprises, involving things I can't do myself.
  • Independence and individuality are very important to me. Like I've always said in my 'now-made-famous-by-ROS' hinglish sher:

Naye rishte banane ke liye puraane rishte nahin todte
Ek couple banne ke liye apni individuality nahin chhodte

    Wah wah!

("You dont sever off old ties to form new bonds. You don't let go of your individuality to be a couple.")

    (Wow. Wow.)

He should be totally into me, but he should have other friends he can hang out with too. I don't want us to stick to each other all the time, or to only watch movies that both agree on. I don't want to be one of a couple that wakes up one fine day and realises they don't have any friends. And oh, I will not change my surname after marriage.
  • A sense of humour is mandatory. I mean, c'mon, he has to live his entire life with my crazy self. It would just be better if he finds my stupid jokes funny. Most of the time, I'm kinda whacko nuts, I do things on impulse, and he should not try and control that aspect of me, or curb my wild side.
  • Music is something I can't live without. So if he's gonna have a problem with my music, I don't think I can live with him. Well, I can try, but not if he's completely tone-deaf. (A guy who can sing Hindi songs and play the guitar at the same time would be ideal, but that can be compromised against other traits.)
  • He should be someone who has opinions on things, and who can keep a conversation alive. He should be able to easily talk to my friends and family, and make them at ease. Hopefully he will be able to make them (and me!) laugh too. Our comfort level should be such that even our silences are not awkward, but kinda assuring.
  • I take my job damn seriously. He should do too. It's not just something I do to earn money. It defines me. My job makes a large part of who I am, and I shall not have anyone belittle its value to me.
  • He should be able to keep up with me, keep up the spark - the zing thing - intact in our lives. Life with me will not be a smooth straight line, it will be a crazy roller-coaster ride. And he's gotta live it up with me. A bit naughty and mischievous, he should always be upto something. Little surprises, little joys. Things that catch me off guard. I can't stand the laid-back "She's-married-to-me-where-can-she-go-now?" types. (Oh, believe me I so can go!) At the end of my tiring day, I should just want to melt in his arms and feel like I belong there. He should give me that kind of goosebumpy vibes.
So that's my list.

And nope, I'm not tagging anyone. :)

Word. A thousand times. My mum once told me she'd only let me get married to someone who loves and appreciates music. I found that so cute!!! Of course, I told her I wouldn't even think of marrying a tone-deaf fella. Made her really happy...hee :)

Travel, cook, health freak, Internet, Independence and individuality and lots of other things you wrote...

I guess few things which you forgot is lots of Love, Faith, Trust, Respect, Love for your family, etc etc etc...

All the things which you wrote, you can always get from someone who is your friend (may be even a flat mate) but from a life partner you should ask for more... Because he is not just someone, he is THE ONE... The feeling of belonging should be a billion times more than any friend...

Its different yaar... (Maggi tomato ketchup)

I liked the second point. Thats where I can beat every competition out, Im a good eater. Fun geek eh, 'freak geek' ko reject mara tune! lol

How much are u willing to compromise on 'retaining the surname' part if other traits are met? Why not change the surname? A harmless little tradition you want to kill because of the call from those dumb radical feminists? What surname will your kids have? You'll fight over that! Your Mr Perfect will have to suffer awkward moments because of it, 'Hi, Im Raj Malhotra and she is my better half Simran Phadke'lol. Keeping the surname is a statement of individuality and not individuality as such. Why is it humiliating for a man to have a spouse who doesn't take his surname, you MCP Tinku?? Well, why is it humiliating for a guy to wear frocks?? No analogy there, just two different facts. In this world women can wear pants, jeans and baseball caps but guys don't wear frocks. Thats how the things are. A woman takes a man's surname, thats how the things are(no analogy I repeat). Its just politically incorrect to be a man these days and politically correct for a woman to make a 'strong woman' statement by breaking every tradition(however harmless) even if it involves breaking her man's ego. I don't know if I sound too primitive and deserve a serious rebuke by the redical feminists. The fact is that a male without a male ego is not a male LOL.

ps: "Chhod diya?" Chaalbaaz..yes??:)

#Virdi,
//Love, Faith, Trust, Respect, Love for your family,

Sheesh!! I did not forget them! I said I am leaving out the obvious characteristics! Do you think I would wanna marry a guy who does not love me, trust me or respect me, just because he can fix my comp?? Eeeesh! My list is just some specifics yaar, and it's not exhaustive.

//Kyun Sayesha... de diya na ek jhatka??

#Kais,
Haha! I'm sure you do :)

#Nivindya,
//i bet you could go on wid more points, couldn't you?

I swear! I could add at least five more points man... but I guess when you meet the right guy, you don't need a checklist, you just know it :)

#The Girl,
//And when you get married, declare it on your blog.....

#Tinku,
//because of the call from those dumb radical feminists?

Sweetheart, it's not because of the dumb radical feminists' call. It's because I love my surname and its combined meaning with my name. And I don't have a good reason why I should change it after I get married.

I'm not gonna get into your male/female debate, because it's a waste of time. :)

//"Chhod diya?" Chaalbaaz..yes??:)

Yes :)

#Kathy,
Thanks, dear! :)
ps: Yeah, one should just be able to do a self-tag for posts one likes :)

#Lalit,
Oh man! That's one of the most important points. Can you imagine, if he's lazy in his 20s when his body is in working conditions, what a lazybum he's gonna become by the time he's 40? Sheesh! :O

#ROS,
Thanks for understanding, babe! And for making my sher famous! ;)

#Aethyr,
Arre mil jayega! Aaj kal guys ki quality is going up, cos of competition I guess... few years ago, you'd be struggling to find one good guy, but these days, you may find yourself struggling to pick one of two really great guys! :|

#American Pie,
Aha! Yeh hui na baat! Thanks! :)

//dinner at my place in 2001/02??

Oh yeah! Single and stunning girls, my man here is cute, funny, and is an excellent cook! :D

#Ursjina,
//i guess that is what it boils down too..ur perfect match should be ur best friend...

Righto! :)

//goldmedal for the last comment ..hehe...

Haha! Then I would win all of them! Cos my comment would always be the last one on every post! :)

#ROS,
True! :O

#Eclectic Blogger,
I have not listed the abstract qualities, because they can get pretty standard. And we all want someone who's loving, caring and blah. So I don't think there's a need to list all that. These are just a few specifics I would like in my guy. Besides, the list is not exhaustive.

Suds said...

Hey Good list. Good it was different and not some standard stuff. But Geeky and Health freak at same time is tough real tough..:) I hope u find someone with all these. Enjoy...

Very nice Sash. Btw, I do not like the word "lover" as well :-)). And, even I have thought at times that I would not want to change my surname :-).

>>At the end of my tiring day, I should just want to melt in his arms and feel like I belong there.

Loved this.

And I think many don't get it that a job is a part of who people are(even if it is not a perfect job). And by belittling it, they are belittling the person.

It's great you love to cook. I can't imagine a guy who wouldn't love to be a guinea pig there! Hahaa :-).

A little vision for Sayesha: In an exotic locale, on a little vacation with family (from both sides) a tall, handsome guy in a black shirt, with a guitar in his hands and a twinkle in his eye, giving a surprise serenade to Sash??! Howzaaat?? :-)

//I'm not gonna get into your male/female debate, because it's a waste of time.

The idea wasn't to start a debate. Its just that I read this for the second time on your blog and the only other place I have read such things are in the male bashing columns of the media. I thot you picked up this idea from there. If I make my top 10 list 'Respect for tradition n elders' will be there. I do that and I expect that.

I didn't like your idea of retaining the surname!:p No debates just skip the comment without a reply. :)

Sayesha,

// He should be able to keep up with me, keep up the spark - the zing thing - intact in our lives

That is a very good point... A relationship without the spark is no good.

// he should always be upto something. Little surprises, little joys. Things that catch me off guard.

Just remember that surprises work best when they come as... a surprise! It's no fun if you know something's always gonna happen. Just like water tastes best when you're thirsty...

I guess what I'm saying is, allow yourself to be surprised... don't expect it :)

#Harshi,

//Howzaaat??

Gosh! That would be something... I'd love a serenade like that! And since we're in utopia, let's throw in the condition that the guy has to write the song himself? ;)

#Kathy,
Good morning, babe! Good luck working on the tags! :)

//i'll get coffee first(sip sip)want some??

I'm not really a coffee person. How about soya bean milk? ;)

#Tinku,
I know you didn't wanna start a debate, but knowing the history of the comment space on this blog, I didn't wanna get started on a debate that really has no logic to it. :)

//'Respect for tradition n elders'

I would put that under my 'obvious characteristics' list. Because I am like that, I may not follow tradition, but I sure respect it. For example, I don't go to mandirs, but if someone wants me to accompany them, I will do so, with all due respect, and clad in proper mandir clothers at that.

//I didn't like your idea of retaining the surname!:p

And Tinku gets eliminated! ;)

#American Pie,
Whoa! Pie having gulabo? Kya baat hai! :) And the gulab jamuns I made were not sugar-free yaar (yikes!). They were low-cal gulabos! :)

//Technically the 4 gulab jamuns i am having equal 16 sugar free ones isnt it?

Hahaha! Do a sugar content analysis in your next MBA project! ;)

#Viv,
//I can't remember what we ate though

Gee thanks a lot! :/

//It's no fun if you know something's always gonna happen.

That's actually a different point from my 'always upto something'. :)

//I guess what I'm saying is, allow yourself to be surprised... don't expect it

Yeah, this I agree with! And yes, I don't expect surprises. Which is why, the one given to me by someone yesterday, was super duper cool! :)

#Vikram,
//Just lazy enough to not wake up at 6 every morning.

Arre yaar, I dun wake up at 6 every day out of choice. Karna padta hai... rozi-roti ki khaatir... :)

#Om,
Welcome to Sayeshaz! :)

//I guess...u may get a guy who may not fit into any of these 10 points mrntiond above, but still u'll like him.

Cun't resist but quote this coz...
this is 100% the kinds i am ...

FEMALE PRAYER

Before I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man, who's not a creep,
One who's handsome, smart and strong
One who loves to listen long,
One who thinks before he speaks,
One who'll call, not wait for weeks.
I pray he's gainfully employed,
When I spend his cash, won't be annoyed.
Pulls out my chair and opens my door,
Massages my back and begs to do more.
Oh! Send me a man who'll make love to my mind,
Knows what to answer to "how big is my behind?"
I pray that this man will love me to no end,
And always be my very best friend.
Amen

MALE PRAYER

I pray for a deaf mute nymphomaniac with big jugs who owns a liquor store and a fishing boat. This doesn't rhyme and I don't give a toss. Amen

//How about with black sesame flavor or turmeric on it

#Sahil,
//But like Om said, u may just end up getting the opposite of what u wished for.

//I don't travel much, I'm not a geek, I'm lazy as hell, I'm not tall, dark, and handsome, I'd expect the Mrs. to change her family name to mine....

Sheesh. Then you have no chance, my dear. Cos this potential Mrs. comes as a complete package, maiden surname included. My take is -- if you wanna change my surname, you wanna change me. And if you wanna change me, why are you with me in the first place? :)

//BUT I love food

Maybe you should try my cooking and go tell that moron who said I don't come across as the kind who can cook! Hmmph! :/

//I can SO pull off a black shirt :)

How about literally?

//LOVED the sheyr u wrote

Thank you, though strange you should appreciate a sheyr about individuality, and expect the Mrs to let go of it to become 'the couple'.

//should've just written "i love raven"

Or perhaps "you wish!" ? ;)

#Raven,
Oye Virdi's last point is 'awesome in bed'. I think that's included in my 'spark' and 'zing thing' point! :)

#Virdi,
Tu nahin samjhega. I am not saying love is an etc etc. Sheesh! I'm saying those are obvious characteristics. No one would say "I want a dumb, insensitive, uncaring, MCP." My list is a bit more specific. And love is of course encompassing the whole thing! Ullu how can I marry a guy I don't love, just because he can play a damn guitar and sing a damn hindi song????

Ho gayi tasalli? Ghusi bheje mein baat? If you bring up this non-issue one more time na, and expect me to answer your nonsensical queries, I will kick your ass! :/

Geez, didn't know u felt that strongly about the surname thing. It's not about changing the person you are, it's just a customary thing. I mean I would have no problems changing my surnames IF it was the common practice for guys to change their surnames to the females.

Well I would have to TRY ur food and decide for myself won't I? Still not convinced.

And hey, I'm all up for individuality, but there are just some things I 'see' the Mrs. doing for me. Just as there are things that I see myself doing for the Mrs.

And whaddaya mean 'literally' pull off a black shirt? Yeah I can pull it off myself?!?!

#Sahil,
Boy, aren't you glad you're not marrying me? :)

I love my surname and the way it goes with my name. If I change it, I'd feel like a different person, and so I dun wanna do that, not unless someone gives me a perfectly logical reason why I should change it.

//Just as there are things that I see myself doing for the Mrs.

Oh yeah? Let's see a post on that, Mr I'd-change-my-surname-for-her, shall we? :)

//And whaddaya mean 'literally' pull off a black shirt?

What I mean is that a guy has to be really confident about his body before he pulls off a shirt a la Salman :)

Ah Lists.!

So how will the selection be done? Will you make an excel file, list these 10 attributes with appropriate weightages & give ratings to propects? The person with maximum score ought to be the winner? :D I know I deserve hazaar galis for that. No need for you to tell me.....

Just for the heck of it let me see how I fare.......

1. I so love travelling too.
2. Nothing special about food, but I always like trying anything new & experiment a lot.
3. I'm not a health freak. But yes I don't smoke & am tall. I'm not sure about confidence part. I'm not lazy in doing new things. It's the old necessary things which we "ought" to do in life that bore me.
4. I don't know if I'm the "geek" in true sense. But I have fixed my comp many a times.
5. Same here. I too feel very strongly about this. Be it for a ritual or an accepted practice, changing of surnames still reeks of something I don't like.
6. I'm not sure about this. But I tend to laugh at things others don't think of. Is this a sign of good or bad sense of humor, I don't know.
7. I love music too. I can sing hindi songs. But never tried Guitar.
8. I am opinionated. But I donno about comfort level.
9. Of course.
10. Again donno about that. Will purely depend on the chemistry I guess.

Anyway abhi to main bacha hoon. The description was purely for research purposes - So that you have one benchmark (apart from ritzkini of course) to compare future prospects with. Hehehe..

Happy shortlisting.... ;)

//And Tinku gets eliminated! ;)

*walks away with the dejected Sachin Tendulkar look, head down, helmet under his arm, smashing the bat on the ground, pin-drop silence in the stadium*

Geoffrey Boycott: O this is rooobish, what do you say Raaavi?
Ravi Shastri: Yeah Geoff, it was clearly a no ball!!

*fades away in the pavillion, no eye contacts, refusing to talk to the team mates, dissapears in the dressing room, closes the door behind*

Out of boredom, ive decided to see if i fit the bill:

1. I like travelling but only to places which have all the comfort and luxury.
2. I can surely do that and i'm known for my brutal honesty, so i'll give the exact feedback.
3. Contrary to what you think, im not lazy. I would love to go to the gym with someone. I dont smoke either. But im not tall :(
4. Perfect fit.
5. Again, prefect fit. Dont care about the surname either.
6. I have a good enuf sense of humor. Hopefully, it will get better with time.
7. I am a bug music buff and can sing well. Can't play the guitar tho :((
8. I can talk to anyone. I never let anyone get bored but only if i want to.
9. ITA. Again, perfect fit.
10. Its hard to tell which type i'll turn out to be but it would depend on my partner.

So how did i fare?

ps: I just realised someone else has already done this *disappointed*

Hey!
Interesting.

Though I have a question...

Is it blog-a-legal to start a tag even if noone has tagged you?

I mean, obviously, someone must be initiating all the tags, right?

#Lalit,

#Tinku,
Arre? Gave up already? Chood diya? :D

//it was clearly a no ball!!

Mard ho, how can you give up without a fight yaar? Whatever little I know of you, you don't come across as the 'no balls' kind!

#Raj,
Haha! Yeah, pple have done it before. But since I'm not looking at a blog swayam-war, I hope someone out there likes your list :)

#Tequila,
I think every tag starts as a post. You write a post listing some things and you wanna know the same things about others. That's when you tag them and the tag spreads.

#Pingoo,
Yeh toh sirf round 1 hai, actual list toh bahut lambi hai! :)
