A Wednesday on a wednesday

Random thoughts after watching 'A Wednesday':
  • What happens when you make a movie that has no hero or heroine, two veterans, one item girl who really can't act (playing a news reporter, no less), two young actors who actually don't have much to their credit, and no songs? You either end up with total distaster or you end up with a devastatingly awesome movie. Fortunately, 'A Wednesday' falls in the second category.

  • Naseeruddin Shah so rocks the movie, literally and otherwise, that it's absolutely incredible.

  • Even though it's an out and out Naseer movie, Anupam Kher lent able support. In fact, his character could teach managers a few lessons on crisis management and task delegation. If only I could tell my team members too, "You have 10 minutes to do this. Go!"

  • Some of the dialogues are amazing. They are especially hard-hitting because of the use of common English words - it sounds just like the way you and I talk.
  • Did anyone get the part where Anupam Kher calls Jai back just before he and Arif are about to leave and says, "Yeh sab khatam hone ke baad tumhe Arif ko..." and Jai nods to show he understands? I didn't quite get what Anupam Kher meant, and I'm not convinced with the explanations I have heard so far.

  • The movie reminded me of RDB and Aamir (in the 'common man getting sucked into violence' funda), but while RDB was masala, Aamir was arty, A Wednesday was the perfect balance.

  • A great background score literally keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, even if the camera is simply focusing on someone's face.

  • We thought watching A Wednesday on a wednesday would be cheesy so we did it. Doesn't look like a lot of people think like us. I was the first person to buy tickets to the show, and the theatre had a total of some 25 people. Bas!

  • I would have been happy seeing Naseer and Anupam in a movie together, but then they had to throw in Jimmy Shergill, bringing back a gush of memories of how bad a crush I had on him. I didn't like him in Mohabbatein but does anyone remember him in 'Mere yaar ki shaadi hai', particularly the first part of the song "Jaage jaage" where he moves his fingers through the wind and goes, "Resham si hain yeh hawaayein sanam"? *SWOOON* & *THUD*

  • I cannot express how glad I am to see him get out of chikna-boy mode. Calling all producers and directors, can we see him in more movies? Please??

  • I love Jimmy Shergill.

  • Shub and I have made a pact. I give her Farhan Akhtar (ghanta give actually, she snatched him and ran off!) and I get to keep Jimmy Shergill.

  • Speaking of guys that make me go weak in the knees, the Aamir Bashir fella who played Jai, wasn't too bad either. I especially loved his 'acting in front of the TV camera' scenes. Takes a lot of talent for an actor to act like he's acting. (Okay, that sentence will only make sense to you if you've watched the movie!)

  • Electric baba was too good! "Shaher mein gadhhe nahin, gadhhe mein shaher hai!"

  • Anyone noticed the nariyal pani man from Munnabhai 2 as one of the terrorists?

  • Deepal Shaw. Sigh. "Aapne mujhe beta kaha?" Haan beta, go back and be a baby doll. Acting, or rather, just talking, is not something you're made for.

  • This was yet another movie where the subtitles could not even correctly handle the English words in the dialogue! CM says, "First thing." Subtitles say, "Personally." Huh?

  • Again. I love Jimmy Shergill.

  • My all-crushing crush on Jimmy aside, the movie is totally kickass. Do not miss it.

  • And finally, a Mithun Chakravarty song, which speaks my heart (and also sounds like a dog trainer's anthem, ahem.) - Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, aaja aaja aaja... :)

Awesome movie..i must say...
hard hitting and rock solid acting by the two veterans..
these guys are total legends..and the act both naseer and anupam kher have put up is commendable..
wonder why anupam kher has to waste his talent by appearing in movies like KKompany(i saw the trailers and i was aghast)...
Jimmy shergill..well..what a relief to have him do some real stuff..i like the way hes hit just about everyone mercilessly in the movie:-)

Sayesha...how do you manage to do this yaar??!!! Every single word in this post echoes my thoughts...be it crush on Jimmy Shergill...loving his transformation from chikna boy to a man wid attitude...the "acting" acting scenes of Jai...laughing on "electric baba"...going gaga over Naseer and Anupam's performance...or yucking on Deepal Shaw!!! (and well, I watched it on the Wednesday of last week....and told my hubby..."so we r watching A Wednesday on a wednesday!!!) ...cud it be more coincidental??

One more thing I wanna mention....I saw this movie just a few days before serial blasts in Delhi....and after the blasts I thought....wish there was actually A Wednesday in real life!

Kudos to UTV for making such thought provoking films...earlier Aamir and now A Wednesday.

Your comments make me all the more eager to watch the movie as soon as possible....

How do we know said...

i lovr Jimmy Shergill Too.

And i like the movie too.

Personally, i think Anupam Kher was way better than Naseer. Way, way better. Also the role had more range.

Hey thanks Sayesha. I remember that was the only Wednesday refrence.

And let me too join the "I heart Shergill" club here :) His version of chikna, gum-chewing yeda was definitely delicious. Add Aamir Bashir, and there is no shortage of eye-candy in this movie.

coincidence or what!!!
aaj subah apun ne review daala hai iska...and yes the movie Rocks and so does Jimmy 'Lion'-Gill ;-)
Electric Baba was damn hilarious...but I liked both the "hamen upar se order mile hain..." sequences too much...
P.S.: However good 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai' was and however nice the acting was in it (including Uday Chopra's!!! can't believe I just wrote that :-O) but nothing can beat 'My best friends wedding'

Hmmmm

Movie was awesome not an iota of doubt about that.
I really loved it. But how come you didn't mentioned the last dialogues of Naseer... they actually made the movie....
"Mere parivar kaun kab marega yah koi 'Beeep' button daba kar decide nahi karega"!! Awesome 'clap, clap'

And yes even I didnt understand what did Anupam kher menat when he said those things to Jai when both of them were taking the terrorists.

SRK said...

My guess is that Anupam Kher told Jai to shoot Jimmy without actually killin him... which he anyways does at the end...

fav tactic of cops to make it look like the terrorists escaped/got killed following an 'encounter'...

jus guessing though...

aah .. for once I saw a movie before you reviewed it :P
and yeah an awesome movie it was !
and less than 2 hrs .. more like a hollywood thriller than a standard bollywood movie ...

and jai's dialogue to anupam kher after giving an 'interview' -- "yeh sab aap mujhse mat karvaiye .. meri biwi news channels dekhti rehti hai"

:D

good you got to watch the movie, atleast there were 25 people. We went to watch this movie and it was only two of us, so we didn't even get the ticket seemingly they cancelled the show. !

He just asked him to 'shoot-to-injure' Arif so that the whole incident would look like an escape attempt by the terrorists...that way even if they had to release/handover the terrorists to the unknown caller, the story for the media would be that an officer was injured in the course of duty and in trying to prevent an escape...
...Moreover, it had to be Arif because he was the supposedly more-hot headed among the two. Plus Jai was a family waala so him getting injured would have had created problems.
Remember, Arif saying to Jai..."****iye...bol ke to mara hota" after he gets shot...matlab usko bhi maloom tha ki it is standard routine...

Yuss, standard procedure, for all their operations, we assume.

And "Takes a lot of talent for an actor to act like he's acting." REALLY? For some people it comes naturally, no? One name jumps to mind ;)

Haahahahahaha. that was fof Farhan Akhtaar.

Yes Jimmy a good actor I see him in the so called "Parralel Cinema" as it revives and moves forward.

I saw the movie.
I truyly belive that Indian Cinema has some of the finest spoort cast, Naseer, Anupam,Om Puri,Farida Jalal,Paresh Rawal and those guys are fabulous.
The art is in convincing the audience that they are character themselves rather them enacting them.

Its worth seeing the movie again.

Sayesha, you just made me poorer by USD 3.99. After this Jhakaas review, I have to watch the movie...maybe this Sunday.
Next time you do this I'm gonna send you the bill. ;-)

#Dhara,
Hehehe! Yes you must must watch it! :)

#Venkatesan,
:)

#Paaro,
His teeth looked fine in this movie yaar. He looked fine in this movie. *swooooon* & *thud*

#Santa Fanta,
Anupam Kher is in Ckkompany??? Hahahahaha! Maybe Ekta hired him due to his surname? :P

#Priti,
Hahahahaha! :D

#Nidhi,
Hehehe!! Mind-reader! :P

#Nidhi2,
Oh nooo... more competition for my Jimmy.... :/

#How do we know,
Girls, keep your paws off my Jimmy, okay? :P :P :P

//Personally, i think Anupam Kher was way better than Naseer. Way, way better. Also the role had more range.

I thought Naseer so totally looked the part! Exactly like the common man in RK Laxman strips! And his acting rocked that character. :)

#Prithi,
Hehehe... yeah I was like - this is the ultimate duo! They should make another two-cop movie with these dudes!! :)

#Bivas,
Haha! I didn't like the movie Mere yaar ki shaadi hai (and btw, I can't stand Julia Roberts, either! Hehe!) but I thought Jimmy was soooooooo awesome! :D

#Prats,
I did mention the dialogues... I liked how Naseer didn't give one bhashan in shudh hindi or urdu, but he spoke like how we speak - "hum used to ho gaye hain" etc. :)

#SRK,
Hmmm... but then that would have been plan A (if all 4 were released). Why did he shoot him even after plan A failed? How were they going to explain the bomb blast and the three bodies?

#Mythalez,
//and jai's dialogue to anupam kher after giving an 'interview' -- "yeh sab aap mujhse mat karvaiye .. meri biwi news channels dekhti rehti hai"

Hahahaha! That was the best!! :D

#Aethyr,
WHAT??? Really??? :O :O :O

#Bivas,
SRK said the same thing above, but I'm wondering why they went ahead and followed Kher's orders anyway.. how would they explain the bomb blast and the three charred bodies?

#Shub,
I don't know what you're talking about, but if this has any reference to Shah Rukh... err... bouncer, is Shub ko le ke jao re is bar se! :/

#Tarun,
Yeah, I'm going to buy the DVD too! :D

#Anshuj,
Hehehehe! :D

#helpathand,
Ooooh I was listening to "Naam ada likhna" (one of my all-time fav songs) yesterday, and thinking I should watch Yahaan!!

~anu~ said...

oh well, let me explain what i thought about the anupam kher - jai scene. he probably asked jai to shoot a bullet in jimmy shergil's arm (as he did in the end) when the 'encounter' was done.. so perhaps encounter was in the plan anyways.. may be it was to be executed in the event of naseerudin shah not revealing the location of those bombs that he was talking about even after getting the police do so much to release the b*stards!

so FA belongs to Shub now! (ghanta belongs..hahaha!!) :D

\\but I'm wondering why they went ahead and followed Kher's orders anyway.. how would they explain the bomb blast and the three charred bodies?
Plan-B would be to shoot him in the arm to explain killing the terrorists. Probably they had anyway planned to kill all four rather than releasing them. Waise bhi media ko maloom nahin tha about the operation or the bombs being planted or the location where these terrorists were being taken (except for Naina...who in any case was taken into confidence by the Commissioner).
About the charred bodies...no one saw the blast happening or any charred body...the only dead body that was flashed on the news was of the fourth guy who was shot...
the blast took place on an abandoned runway where no one was expected to be seeing any such happenings.
Also remember, the commissioner saying to the guys..."do a good job...shaam ko mere ghar pe drinks ke liye aa jaana"...Now he wouldn't be celebrating a failed/botched up mission right?

to repeat one of my fav dialogues off-late..."Ab aap convince ho gaye hain ki main aur boloon???" ;-) :P

With reference to the dialogue b/w Anupam Kher when he calls Jai back just before he and Arif are about to leave and says, "Yeh sab khatam hone ke baad tumhe Arif ko..."

All the possible explanations given above become evident after Jai shoots Arif in the arm to make it look like a standard police operation. But till this scene takes place one may start linking the following scenes togather:

a) All the terrorist names are Arabic / Muslims and so is Arif's name.......
b) Rememebr the scene where all four are being handed over...did you notice how the last terrorist(Damn i cnt remember his name...but the one who does not get blown up in the blast) looks at Arif ...
c) Also while sitting in the Bus Arif hides the taveez (the chain) that he is wearing when the same terrorist keeps ataring at him and not at Jai....asks Arif's name to which
d) And in the scene where Arif drags the same terrorist away from the rest three

These do hint in some hidden ways that Arif might be involved with the terrorist somehow and Anupam Kher would be suggesting to Jai to take down Arif too.

I love how the story writer has twisted the story. There would have been a number of people who would have thought on these lines but the ending is a so different.

You see if the last scene is standard procedure than Jai would have known about it anyways, Aunpum dint have to call him back. But he did. And this is the beat thing about the story writer. He makes us feel a bit guilt in the end for thinking that Arif might be part of the terroeist plan being of the same faith.

My favourite scene is when Jai receives a call from his wife when he is on the bus and she is taking the train to come back. You can see that he wants to tell her to go back and not step out of the house till its safe as the five bombs could have been anywhere even in the train that she was gonna take but he doesn't.....Loved the scene.

as always loved this one as well..
the movie was great..and climax speech ultimate..

\\but I'm wondering why they went ahead and followed Kher's orders anyway.. how would they explain the bomb blast and the three charred bodies?

i believe that was about Arif's transfer order..which was talked abt in his introduction scene.
