Come again?

So I was flipping through the channels when Viv asked me to stop at one. The song 'Bahara' from 'I Hate Luv Storys' was playing. The song makes me cringe (not as much as the way the word 'stories' has been spelt in the title, or the movie itself, or Sonam Kapoor, but it still makes me cringe for some reason).

"Eeeee. This one? I hate this song!" I said.

"WHAT?! I love it!" He said, shocked.

"I don't understand it. What is "Bahara bahara... hua dil pehli baar ve"?? Is something missing? What does she mean "Dil bahara hua?" What does bahara mean anyway??"

"You don't know what bahara means?????" He looked really shocked this time.

"Erm, no... I know 'bahaar' is spring. What is bahara???" I said, a little embarrassed, because I am always making fun of his knowledge of Hindi lyrics and their meaning.

"Bahara," he said slowly and solemnly, as if he was explaining something to a small child, "means 'come out'."

Hey Sayesha- think this is the first time I am commenting on yer blog but been reading for more than 2 years now...i love your way of looking at things and finding happiness in small tiny moments. Over the years I have kind of lost that touch and have become cynical..when I feel down n out, I come to yer blog and read a random post..i don't know how to put it except that i wish i was able to enjoy my life and ppl the way you do..Cheers- Ratika

Hi Sayesha,
You have a simple writing style with no use of heavy vocabulary, but still there is something magnetic in the pieces as I read.
I have started digging your archives and must say I totally loved the convo with your dad about the phone unlock/lock post. :)

Cheers,
BA

BTW, my Hindi dictionary gives

बाहरा : one who works at pouring well water from the bucket into an irrigation channel.

Another meaning for the same word is "the far or off side, left side".

बहार as expected, is spring, but also flourishing state, youth, prime.

बहार पर आना is "to bloom, to be in full glory".

बहारी is having to do with the spring.

I do not find a बहारा.
:)

I do think Viv is onto something :)
बहार आ might be what the song is saying.

Didn't want to turn a joke into a dissertation, but the increasingly meaningless lyrics in songs is very very annoying.

Hahah.. Viv's take is awesome.

I love that song actually, coz of Rahat $$ Khan's voice. After getting wholly addicted to the song, I went and looked up the lyrics. So as per http://www.bollymeaning.com/2010/07/bahara-ihls-complete-song-meaning.html, it means 'blossoming'. Dunno how correct that is, but I love it anyway. :)
