Coach coach hota hai

Sayesha Smitten showbiz kitten is back.

And this time, she's not climbin' no trees and snoopin' around Bollywood directors' living rooms to bring you the latest and insider Bollywood news.

This time, she is, truly, smitten.

I can't help it - I think Shah Rukh knocks a decade off my age. He turns me into a smitten, worshipping, silly teenager. And watching KBC episodes on youtube over the last few weekends has rekindled my hopeless teenage love for King Khan. Every time I try to dismiss him as a hamming overactor after watching a Ram Jaane, Anjaan or KANK, he does a thappad-like comeback such as Swades or Chak De India, and turns my knees to jelly again. Kudos to Shub and Viv for tolerating my clapping and my (soundless and hence rather unsuccessful) hooting throughout the movie. Speaking of behaviour that turns out embarrassing for friends, Viv came for the movie directly from his cricket practice and I was so excited I held up his cricket bat in the theatre a la He-man and went "Chak de!" after the movie ended. And oh - before I forget, a message to that friend of Viv's who came home for dinner last night and "accidentally revealed" to me that "Shah Rukh dies in the movie", almost breaking my heart - Mera namak khaakar itna bada dhokha? Sadak par mil jaiyo kabhi - ek hockey doongi rakh ke! :/

Switching to a less destructive mode, I pen down (and translate) the most inspiring (and applicable across every walk of life) lines from the movie, which I'm not surprised made their way into the list of MP3s from the movie. (And no, I haven't copy-pasted this from some website; I actually listened to the MP3 like a gazillion times and typed out every word.)

Sattar minute. Sattar minute hain tumhaare paas. Shaayad tumhari zindagi ke sabse khaas sattar minute. Aaj tum achha khelo ya bura, yeh sattar minute tumhe zindagi bhar yaad rahenge. Aur kaise khelna hai, aaj main tumhe nahin bataoonga. Bas itna kahoonga ki jao aur yeh sattar minute jee bharkar khel lo. Kyunki iske baad aane wali zindagi mein chahe kuch sahi ho ya na ho, chahe kuch rahe ya na rahe, tum haaro ya jeeto, lekin yeh sattar minute tumse koi nahin chheen sakta. Koi nahin. Toh maine socha ki is match mein kaisa khelna hai aaj main tumhe nahin bataaoonga balki tum mujhe bataoge. Khelkar. Kyunki main jaanta hoon, ki agar yeh sattar minute is team ka har player apni zindagi ki sabse badhiya hockey khel gaya toh yeh sattar minute khuda bhi tumse waapas nahin maang sakta. Toh jao. Jao aur apne aap se, is zindagi se, apne khuda se, aur har us insaan se jisne tumhe... tumpar bharosa nahin kiya, apne sattar minute chheen lo.

"Seventy minutes. You have seventy minutes. Perhaps the most special seventy minutes of your life. Whether you play well today or not, you will remember these seventy minutes for the rest of your life. And today, I will not tell you how to play. All I will say is - go and play these seventy minutes to your heart's content. Because whether what happens to your life after this is right or not, whether you have anything or not, whether you lose or win, no one can snatch away these seventy minutes from you. No one. So I decided that I won't tell you how to play; you will tell me. Through your game. Because I know that if in these seventy minutes, every player of this team plays the best hockey of her life, then even God can't ask you for these seventy minutes back. Go on. Go and snatch your seventy minutes. From yourself. From this life. From your God. And from every single person who did not believe in you."

It may be quite obvious, but for the record, here it is once again.

I love you, Shah Rukh. Chak de!

absolutely amazing movie!!! With a rock-solid performance by SRK and the girls!! Beautiful characterization!!!! it was fab!!!

One of the finest sports movies I have seen from Bollywood. Crisp and to he point and no unwanted yaming from SRK.

One thing I did notice about the 'sattar minute'....it was not actually 70 minutes you know...extra time + penalty goals etc.. yeah the technicalities...:)

Somehow I felt the word 'satar minute' was overused in this entire sequence.

Hey! Yes the movie was awesome!:) I've been telling everyone go see it.

Sudipta Chatterjee said...

Oh I remember that "accidentally revealed" thing --- when Ajnabee had released, we were in our dining hall and I started a rumour at one end, "Kareena Kapoor is the killer". People went through the entire movie expecting her to be revealed as the killer :D :D

Hahahaha.... my blessings with your friend!

Now thanks for telling the climax to me... :(

Btw, I think that dialogue is a straight rip-off from an English movie, Al Pacino says that I guess.. :)

Agree totalli bhai! I myself went around yelling, clapping, raising my hands high up in the air & clapping. Poor people sitting behind me would be cursing me for it and chan chan went my bangles everytime I did that, hehehe. But I sooooooo loved it. Just one thing I missed doing, whistling. I sooooooooo wanted to whistle out aloud so many times, but...sigh! But I did yell & went yoohooooooooo n number of times. For this movie at least, I do agree, SRK rocks & no to forget the girlz, esp the bhains n punjaban! ;D

I loved the movie!! And have been recommending it to everyone I talk to saying.."What you haven't watched it????". :-)) Yeah, that scene where he says this was quite something. Loved so many things about the movie. King Khan is surely King Khan. Kudos to the director too.

@CC: Not an exact rip though...Al Pacino's speech from Any Given Sunday-

I don't know what to say really.
Three minutes
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
all comes down to today.
Either
we heal
as a team
or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play
till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
believe me
and
we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us
or
we can fight our way
back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money
believe it or not.
I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately,
I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the fucking difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

Amazing post and the best movie featuring King Khan ever. He fitted the role to the T.

My adrenaline was pumping all through the movie, great tempo all through.
I would love to watch it again!!

Eee! I so know how you feel! I still lurve SRK, no matter how hammy his acting gets. Somehow, I'm always able to separate his acting skills from my love for him, something that applies only to him and Tom Welling. Fan-love is a weird, illogical thing. :D

I really enjoyed the movie too. I went with friends on Independence Day (woohoo!) and it was just us 6 and 2 other people in the theatre. Pity, since it's fun to have full houses at movies like this (and Lagaan) so you can scream yourself hoarse with all the others. Ah, well. We did that anyway. We cheered every goal, applauded when Komal and Preethi got over their differences and yelled and whooped almost all through the World Cup. I'd forgotten how awesome it is to be able to do that. :D

I'm still loving how these people took 12 relatively unknown girls, gave them ordinary clothes and no make-up whatsoever, and turned them into leads worth cheering crazily for. Just awesome. :)

Good blog!! To add some more on this movie, I definitely recommend this as good timepass. That's about it though. I think the director has succeeded in drawing attention to sports other than cricket and that too women's sport capabilities and reality in India. Maybe a few people will definitely start respecting women's sport in the country.

Honestly, I have nothing else to praise about this movie, since it's not really exciting. Its just another success formula boringly repeated on the screen. Shahrukh is presented as a very inspiring personality but not successful in that attempt. The entire story of the movie can easily be guessed in the first 5 mins of the movie, the story is not at all gripping. Just that we can sit all through movie thinking that Shahrukh is a good actor.
In all.. the movie theme is good, but it lacks that zing that could have made it truly inspirational..

I am not a gr8 fan of SRK.. But this movie is very different, not like the typical SRK movies.
When the girls got to go to the World Cup.. I had tears of joy..
And at the finals.. I was rooting for Team India..

This was not as much as Lagaan experience.. But this is something we can relate to more.. And the Sattar minute waala scene is too good...

I am sure we encounter such moments in life in any field and not just hockey..

Excellent effort by everybody who was in the film

Oh, and PS. I love your posts too! I think you're an incredibly good writer. Sheesh. And it took a guest appearance by Shahrukh for me to confess my love for your blog.

Though the film was loosely based on hollywood flick Miracle (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349825/)
But I liked every aspect of the movie in Hindi only. During the Independence Day celebrations here in NY most of the time Chak de India song was played and I felt really good listening to it.

Yeah, I totally love the title track, goosebumps ho jaate hain bilkul! :D

#Voidzone,
Exactly my thoughts! Swades and Chak De have redeemed him - he can go do ten more KANKs now but I will still love him! :P

#Tejal,
Your hooters? Ahahahahahahaha! :D

#Bivas,
I LOVE maula mere! I listened to it for one whole week on loop! :P

#Janefield,
HI5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

#Zapper,
Totally agree! :D

#SID,
//One thing I did notice about the 'sattar minute'....it was not actually 70 minutes you know...extra time + penalty goals etc.. yeah the technicalities...:)

Dude, the sattar minute speech was BEFORE the game. That's when you don't know if there will be extra time and penalty goals and blah blah. So you work with 70 minutes! Ufff some people! Are you an engineer too? :/

#Duhita,
:D

#Sudipta,
Holy cow! You are evil!!!! :D I think I should write a post on such "accidental revealings"! :P

#Coco,
Ufff... tu jaake movie dekh re... koi leke jao re isko! Climax bata diya it seems! :D

#Parikrama,
Holy cow! You recognised me?? Oh, from Hop-scotch! Hehe... you should have said Hi! But I do remember how crowded it was that day... any friendly behaviour from a random guy would have earned a slam from me with Viv's cricket bat! :P

#Nidhi,
Yep, I did read it! Good going! :)

#Wacko,
Of course I played the MP3 again to verify before publishing! There are more "wannabe-post-editors" lurking in the blogworld that we know! :P But yeah, I do tend to remember stuff from hindi movies. :)

#Rebellion,
CHAK DE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

#Shub,
Hehehehe... mera coach nahin ho sakta?? Hah! Yeh wala coach toh mera hi hai! Muahahaha!
*successfully cracks another bad joke*

#GuNs,
Awesome movie! :D

#Harshi,
YEAH! :D

#Sumedh,
*THWACK ON HEAD*
ps: Ya allah! Sumedh tu phir se waapas aa gaya?? Apun ne pata nahin kaun se paap kiye they pichhle janam mein...

#Bivas,
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS!! This is similar to Sattar minute??? THIS?? HOW????? Just because both have the word "minute" in it? SHEESH!! Us Coco ki toh!! :/

#Manchus,
I can't wait to buy the DVD!!! :D

#Clueless,
Yippee! Can't believe the theatre was so empty though! :O

#Jeevan,
You paused the movie???? You were watching pirated version??? :O Dude this is SO a big-screen movie!!!!

#Narasimha,
I don't think there was anything wrong with the predictable ending. I'd have hated it it if after everything, they'd lost the finals. :| Also, I don't think this was a SRK success formula. There was no heroine and he did not sing any songs - which are typical trademarks of SRK formula movies. At least they did not show an India-Pakistan final. Now THAT would have been cliched.

#Art,
Exactly! Not so much Lagaan, but definitely more relatable!! :D

#V,
:O

#Satish,
Abbe Bhai apun hai woh toh theek hai, lekin tu kabse Behen ban gaya?? Gift chahiye? Haha!

#SD,
You're welcome! Spread the joy! :)

#Vagabond,
Welcome (officially) to the bar! Thanks for the kind words, and yes SRK rules! :D

#Angelsera,
You're welcome! ;)

#Thisisme,
Yeah, it's amazing - some of the girls are actual hockey players, not actresses. And they acted so well!!!!

#Iday,
Oooh Brazil! Enjoy! :D

#Professional bewda,
Wah! Bahut bewde dekhe apun ne, lekin professional bewda nahin dekha tha! Welcome welcome! Refill bhi ho gaya! :D
