Subah ho gayi mamu!

By popular demand (errr... a grand total of five readers asked for it), here's the much-awaited (by the five) sequel to that post of mine which put you to sleep.

Literally.

If that post gave you tips on how to go to sleep, this post will tell you how to get that lazy ass outta that cosy bed.

Just like you can only enjoy a sequel if you have seen the first one, you can only make use of the rich goodness of this post, if you've enjoyed a good night's sleep after following the tips in the last post. (Ok I am beginning to sound like instructions on a chyawanprash bottle.)

  • It is important to keep the alarm clock far away from you, so that you can't just reach out, shut it, and go back to sleep. If possible, lock it in a chest, wrap the chest in a blanket, tie it with rope and put it on the top shelf of your closet. (But, remember to do all this ONLY if you have sharp ears and are a light sleeper. If you're a Kumbhu sleeper, this will not work for you.)
  • Do not ask a lot of people to wake you up. Having too many back-ups in life is not a good thing.
  • Take a cold shower the moment you get up, to shake off all the remnants of your sleep. (Brrrr... I will never do this one!)
  • If you want to save your relationships, don't make requests like "No matter what happens, can you make sure I'm up at six?" to anyone. Remember, splashing someone's face with iced water early in the morning does not happen only in cartoons.
  • Do not use the snooze function in your alarm. Pretend it doesn't exist. Snooze is like that guy who you know is not the one for you, but he's just so damn irresistible you can't help yourself but fall for him. :/
  • Never ever ask Friend 1 to wake you at 6 am, and then Friend 2 to wake you up at 6:15 am and so on (depending on the number of friends you have, and what time they themselves get up). That is equivalent to cheating on someone. If the first friend ever finds out, well, you will not have that friend anymore. Take it from someone who's been Friend 1.
  • Try a morning alarm song on your computer. For obvious reasons, don't recycle the songs you had used to fall asleep. Something with a lot of energy is good. Perhaps you should play something like one of the songs from my Fatta collection (yes, I have a folder of MP3s I refer to as Fatta songs). A perfect example would be "Mera dil le gayi oye kammo kidhar, main dhoondoon usko idhar udhar." Or pick a song you really dislike, like "Tum toh thehre pardesi, saath kya nibhaaoge" or like the song Lalit happened to mention to me the other day "Main kiske liye sar par kanghi karoon" something something... you HAVE to get up. At least to switch off the damn song.
  • Set your computer to play a random song that you have never played before. When something unfamiliar suddenly starts playing in the morn, you'll be startled and you'll wake up, wondering where you are.
  • For those who are non-religious, bhajans may work in the same way as above.
  • Offer to give a wake-up call to the girl/guy you really really like. You will have to wake up early yourself in order to make that call.
  • Make sure your alarm sound is something really nasty. Well, mine is that of birds chirping softly on a sunny morning, but then I'm a Level 3 when it comes to waking up early in the morn. You're perhaps not ready to get there yet. :P
  • Fix up an early morning jogging (or any other form of exercise, such as a sport) with a very disciplined friend. And it should be a friend you cannot afford to lose.
  • The above works better with a crush.
  • Drink two full bottles of water before you sleep. Early morn, you'll need to pee so bad that you will be forced to get up.
But the one that works like a charm is this one.

  • Sleep facing a window on the east, curtains up. The first rays of the sun have this absolutely amazing magical ability to gently nudge you awake. Painlessly. I did not believe it till I tried it myself.
Got any more tips to share?

This works really well. Especially if its someone u hav a crush on.

And if she actually asks me something like " Will u wake me up at 6:30....pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaase" I am sure i wont even sleep!!!

Maybe i shud play "on the roof, in the rain"!! (just came back from the gym! hence the song is stuck in my head :P)

I always keep my alarm across the room and my phone alarm with me. I find that I automatically wake up when there is some work to be done. Thats the best alarm for me! Just the thought of having some urgent work to finish. Otherwise alarms are just a 75% guarantee.

haha so true.

the bit abt waking up someone u really really like works pretty well too, although that also guarantees u an almost sleepless night ;)

This one has worked with me.. I have this understanding with that person that she has to return me the miss call as soon as I give her.. so u'll be awake n waiting for the reply call.. he he.. good one..!!

Another tip is, keeping the alarm tone in the mobile phone as the one which we have for the call.. so when the alarm rings, we actually get up to receive the call.. But this works only for few days..!!

Damn it. Snooze is my best friend. And you're asking me to part with him now? Dear Lord, how on earth will I say goodbye?? :'(

I have a really really weird system of getting up in the morning. Phone alarm (with snooze), digi alarm clock (also with snooze, :P) and friend's call. Phone clock is about a minute slower than digi clock, and so it rings first. Snooze, sleep. Digi clock rings a minute later. Snooze, sleep. Alarm clock rings four minutes later. Snooze, sleep. Digi clock rings again four minutes later. Snooze, sleep. Phone alarm. Snooze, sleep.(Whaat! I told you Snooze was a good friend!)Repeat until finally it becomes too much to bear. Immediate awakening.

Pretty elaborate, huh? :/

Quoting myself,

Phone clock is about a minute slower than digi clock, and so it rings first.

D'oh! I meant...phone clock is a minute faster than the digi clock. That's why it rings first. Sheesh. I need sleep. :/

Arrey that song was something like this
“Hum kapde badal kar jayein kahan
Aur baal banyein kiske liye”

DAMN ...couldn't find it on the net. I really tried for u Sayesha :-(
But u still have this

//Take a cold shower the moment you get up
ARE YOU CRAZY??
//Drink two full bottles of water before you sleep.
hmmmm...lemme try this one out

Ok here is what I do.. I hv a reminder on the cell for 7:00 am, then the alarm on the cell at 7:15 and finally the alarm clock at 7:30... n I still manage to beat all of them sometimes!!!

I have the hardest time getting up in the morning. My place is 5 miles frm my work so I try to sleep as much as I can and try to get to work on time. I need to wake up early. Will try everything on the list and give u an update.

remember how you thought I had not woken up on the day I was to fly to the US - all because my phone was in my bag, and I didnt answer your call... :)

#Sriniketh,
Aha! I see someone has experience in this one! Haha! :)

#Macho Girl,
Hahaha! Yeah that song should work well, it will make you wanna dance, and you can only dance if you get up! Aha! :)

#Vikram,
Eeesh you like that song?? Hahaha! :D
And oh, waking up to the rays of sun is not the same as asking ROS to wake you up. Just clarifying. ;)

#Anon,
Hehehe... looks like this is the most popular method so far! :)

#ROS,
//Aur east facing ghar nahi ho to??
Arre tu toh khud Rays of Sun hai, mirror ke saamne so ja, subah reflection rays se jaag jayegi bwahahaha! :D
ps: Ullu ghar east facing nahin toh kya hua, kisi room ki koi khidki toh east (ya almost east) facing hogi na? :D

#Chirag,
Haha! I was actually gonna write that point but I was reminded of a friend who has a game buddy, and both oversleep, hoping that the other won't call them! :D
ps: I guess both have to be very driven for this to work.

#Jeevan,
Aha! Another supported of popular theory! :P

//Another tip is, keeping the alarm tone in the mobile phone as the one which we have for the call

Haha! If your mind is anything like my friend ROS', then you will wake up to receive the call, but not to well, wake up. :)

#Aslam,
Arre why are you repeating my ideas? I already said do baatli chadhaake so ja! Pani! :D

#Clueless,
Sheesh! It's too long and complicated. You might as well sleep in that extra time that you do all the nautanki, and have only one alarm to which you pronto get up. :)

#Lalit,
HAHAHAHA! Thanks for correcting me. Sheesh what a song! :S

//I really tried for u Sayesha :-(

No Lalit no, please have pity on me, don't send me Altaf Raja songs. Please?? :D

//Drink two full bottles of water before you sleep. hmmmm...lemme try this one out

500-ml bottles okie? Not the 1-litre ones! :D

You waste half an hour doing that nautanki? Just sleep till 730 and get up fataak se ek alarm se! :)

#Thanu,
Try the sun rays one! :)
ps: Anything here will only work if you sleep at a sane time, unlike me :(

#American Pie,
Yes I remember! You still owe me one for making me panic like that! I was calling up your friends and housemates all over the place to check! :O

Thanu said...

The same thing with American pie happened to me. I was going somewhere and was in security check at the airport when my sister called and I cudn't answer. I called her back once everything was done she was so freaked out thinking I overslept and I'll miss my flight.

hmmm, good sequel!
i dont have a prob getting up. its more difficult to stay awake. i get up and then go back to sleep! here's how:

//It is important to keep the alarm clock far away from you, ...
been there, done that - used to keep the old mechanical style alarm clock locked in an empty utensil! oh it just doubles the noise and used to wake up everyone in the house!
prob -- fetched the alarm clock from the utensil, switched it off, dozed again!

//Offer to give a wake-up call to the girl/guy you really really like. You will have to wake up early yourself in order to make that call.
been there, done that, doing that still!
prob--got up, called her, woke her, went back to sleep
//Drink two full bottles of water before you sleep. Early morn, you'll need to pee so bad that you will be forced to get up.
done this one too!
prob--got up, went to the loo, slept again after that!

i even keep 3-4 alarms, but still get up late, coz of sleeping again syndrome!
got any solutions???

PS:
// "No matter what happens, can you make sure I'm up at six?"
i love waking ppl with such a contract clause -;)

Jogging with a crush really works, I am an early morning person but i used to jog with a friend who is kumbhkaran, so every morning i would be at her place, would tie her up with a rope and drag her for jogging, untill ofcourse she fell for a cutie and Man!! after that she would actually wake me up and dance all the way to the park ... LOL

I've got a problem. Dammit, I can't seem to stop thinking of "On the roof, in the rain" whenever I visit ur blog. :D

I too, by the way, have a terrible sleeping problem...err...by sleeping problem i mean i don't get up easily once i'm off to dreamland. My parents had almost rechristened me Kumbhakarna II; I decided it wouldn't be a good name to tag around with, so I left Calcutta and came to Ahmedabad to do my MBA. :)

I'll tell you what works best. Sleep atleast 8 hours before you need to get up :)

On a more realistic note, patterns work best for the body. Sleep and get up at the same time...

#Rodent,
Welcome to Sayeshaz. Please don't gnaw at the wires around her. :P

Finally, I have my first validation of the last tip! :)

#Lalit,
Just put the 'Hum honge kaamyaab ek din' song! :D

#Virdi,
//take the blanket over your face swicth off the alarm... and sleep again...

WHAT?? Blanket over your face??!! You sleep like that??? Do you know that blocks oxygen supply to the brain?? Achha no wonder... ;)

ps: Let go of my pretty hand, you Kumbhkaran! :/

#Susaant,
Welcome to Sayeshaz. I hope you're not an automated ad selling me alarm clocks. I refuse to click on that link. :/

#Karthik,
Welcome to Sayeshaz! :) Lemme know which ones work for you! :)

#Shekhar,
HAHAHA! This is freaky. Every time I see a comment by you, I think of you very stressed at work ove that damn presentation with your teammates driving you nuts, and then you read the 'On the roof' wala post, and start dancing in the office! :D
ps: Try this wake-up methods. Perhaps something will work for you! :)

#Viv,
I can't. :( Not as long as I am doing both working and studying :(
